Although, there have been many films produced in various regional languages of the Northeast in the past years, there hasn’t been any movie which encompasses the entire Northeast region. Debutante director, Rupak Gogoi, aims to correct that with his film Gangs of Northeast which will be released on 18th August.
It has a fresh visual outlook along with a captivating story and appealing characters. Co-produced by Sanjive Narain and Kenny Lyngdoh under the banner of AM Television and TUNE IN Infotainment, it is the first film to be released in Hindi and Khasi languages.
The film revolves around the life of a teenage girl and her single mother residing in Shillong, and how everything changes when their present intertwines with their past. The screenplay runs across three different storylines, complete with elements of youth romance, tragic love and the underworld drug business. Beautifully penned by Avishka Phukan, it is very interesting to watch how the three stories unfold and merge into a single climax.
Debutant lead actor Vivek Bora shines in the entire film, and Rewati Chetri proves herself as a confident actress. Udayan Duarah, Fairypriya Ahmed and Manimala Das do justice to their characters. The eye catchers have to be the three villains portrayed by RK Robindra, Pradhan Deuri and Chiranjeeb Dutta.
The noteworthy aspect is the cinematography by Papu Deka. Showcasing heavenly locations in Shillong, the overall visual presentation looks beautiful and classy. The songs are refreshing and the vibrant background music by Poran Borkatoky is in tune with the emotions of the film. The action sequences designed by Pradhan Deuri need a special mention because the fights were kept raw, simple and were performed without the use of wires and effects. Ratan Sil Sarma has done a good job editing the film.
Gangs of Northeast has a lot of elements and sentiments which the people of the Northeast will be able to connect to. Even with limited resources, Rupak Gogoi has presented a thrilling and unconventional movie which cine-goers will definitely enjoy.
