Designer Samant Chauhan recently showed how Muga silk can be given an international appeal through his designs at a fashion event in Guwahati. Samant Chauhan has earlier won accolades for revamping Chanderi handloom as he gave them a western touch to popularize it among the masses.
A fashion show which showcased the possibilities of Muga was organized by Pride-East Entertainment Private limited in Guwahati recently. The event was organized to promote the preservation of golden thread yielding cocoon Antherea Assamensis.
‘I have plans to use the golden silk in my other creations too. This is one of the finest silks I have had the opportunity to work on and I feel if promoted and conserved, clothes made of Muga silk will have a huge demand abroad, Muga has a golden hue unlike any other silk. It adds a very elegant touch to the dresses’, said designer Samant Chauhan.
‘The golden thread yielding cocoon is on the brink of extinction due to various reasons including climate change. It is the prime responsibility of the people of the State to strive for its preservation,’ CMD of Pride-East Entertainment Ltd, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma said.
‘The dreams that the weavers of Sualkuchi weave on the fabric is gradually becoming a style statement and a trend among the new generation. The Muga wear has every potentiality to be famous in the whole world,’ Sharma added.
Showstopper of the evening Sonal Chauhan from the film Jannat walked the ramp along with other models wearing the Muga attires designed by Samant Chauhan. Sonal Chauhan wore a long Muga Gown which she said to be very elegant and comfortable. The show was directed by Ketan Bhatia.
