The construction activities of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Changsari has hit a roadblock in the form of National Green Tribunal (NGT). The Kolkata-based Eastern Zone Bench of the NGT, by an interim order, has stopped all construction activities of AIIMS at Changsari. This was informed in a statement by AIIMS Demand Committee of Raha. This Committee since the last few months has been demanding for AIIMS in Raha, Nagaon.
The Committee said the order came in the wake of a petition (original application No.144/2016/EZ) filed by Sarbeswar Boruah and others challenging the official move to set up the AIIMS at Changsari. The petitioners named the Union of India and others as the respondents.
The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, Pollution Control Board, Assam, and the Environment and Forest Department appeared before the NGT Bench in connection with the case on Thursday. However, the State and the Union Government did not appear before it. The Bench has ordered issuance of notices to both the governments.
Initially, AIIMS was supposed to be constructed in Raha but later the location was changed to Changsari. Widespread protest was seen in Raha after that which culminated in a tragedy when a local named Mintu Deori was killed from police firing.
