‘Revolution does not depend on any particular leader’, said Paresh Baruah, Commander-in-Chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent). While interacting with media, Baruah said, ‘ULFA’s struggle for independence is not dependent on any particular leader. Over the years, the organisation has seen a change of chairmanship four times; Dr Abhizeet Hazarika is the fourth chairman’.
He reminisced that in 2010, everyone thought that the ULFA would be finished after several senior members were arrested; later, these leaders decided to hold talks with the Government of India. ‘But the organisation survived and different wings of the outfit are still carrying out their activities smoothly,’ he further claimed.
Meanwhile, another top ULFA leader Anup Chetia said that he is ready for peace talks, ‘There are many people who think that that I am not interested in peace talks (with the government). Some also suspect that I will run away. But I am ready for the peace talks’. He further said that he is grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for trying to bring him back to the mainstream.
