Few days after capturing Dispur, the saffron party has now managed to take over the reins of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). On Tuesday, BJP councilor Mrigen Sarania has been appointed as new ‘Mayor’ of Guwahati Municipality Corporation. It is for the first time that Assam BJP has taken over control of Guwahati Municipality body.
‘We know the expectations of the public are very high after we came to power at Dispur. When we take over the command at the GMC, the expectations will be similar. Though we won’t be able to magically do things overnight, however it will be our responsibility to try our best to live up to the expectations,’ said Sarania. He further added that solving the problem artificial floods and ensuring better roads in Guwahati will be his top priorities.
Congress faced a serious crisis when Deputy Mayor Nilakshi Talukdar stepped down after her husband was denied a ticket in this election. Following her path former Mayor Abir Patra resigned from his position on last Friday. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal appointed Bijuli Kalita Medhi as Deputy Mayor of Guwahati.
