Prasar Bharati is set to launch a new 24×7 satellite channel in the Northeast. To cater to the region’s cultural sensibilities, new channel DD Arun Prabha, will be launched on December 25. A sum of Rs 7 crore has been allotted to the Prasar Bharati by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry for the launching of this new channel.
The channel will showcase programmes on the diverse culture of the Northeastern states. This will be Doordarshan’s second channel for the Northeastern region. The state-owned broadcaster already runs DD North-East, which broadcasts entertainment and information-based programmes in Assamese, Bengali, English and other languages of the region.
It is a part of Doordarshan’s initiative to strengthen its activities in the Northeast. The proposal to launch DD Arun Prabha was initially announced in Narendra Modi government’s first budget.
In September, Doordarshan had partnered with an outdoor music festival of Arunachal Pradesh, called Ziro Festival of Music, organized by a local cultural organization, tourism Department of Arunachal Pradesh and the Ministry Of Development of Northeast region.
