Recent government data presented by Agriculture Minister Rakibul Hussain at the Assembly revealed that Assam is increasingly becoming unsafe. As per the data, there has been 21,556 cases of rape and 91, 419 cases of harassment of women during Tarun Gogoi’s regime as Chief Minister till now (2001-2015).
According to the report, 8922 cases of rape were recorded in the first eight years of Gogoi’s regime but in the next seven years, there has been a severe increase in the sexual abuse of women leading to 12,634 incidents. 2014 saw the highest number of reported cases with 2,047 incidents while in 2015, 1,852 cases were reported.
The data also reveals that during this period, there have been 19,821 incidents of murder, 43,879 kidnapping, 1, 17,930 thefts, 4,816 dacoity, 158 murder suspecting witchcraft, 17 threats and 30,447 car thefts. Apart from that, there have also been 43,328 cases of suicide. 2,275 civilians have been killed from terror attacks while 213 people were killed by security forces. Also, 304 security personnel were killed by terrorists and 2,103 terrorists were also killed by security forces.
The minister also informed that from 2001 till date, there have been eight ethnic clashes in the state and 6,658 cases in this connection were registered. Of these, chargesheets were filed in 159 cases, final reports submitted in 3,594 while 535 cases are under investigation.
