Renowned fashion designer and social entrepreneur Omi Gurung from Sikkim was conferred with The Telegraph Northeast Excellence Award 2017 on September 7 at an award ceremony organised by The Telegraph at Radisson Blu, Guwahati. He received the award for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Sikkim and the Northeast region.
The Telegraph Northeast Excellence Awards 2017 is a pioneering and unique initiative from the house of ABP Group, India’s leading media conglomerate. It is a unique award that recognizes and acknowledges the contribution made by individuals in varied sectors across the eight States of Northeast for helping lead their State and the region towards growth and development.
The award was presented by Dhurbu Mukherjee, Vice President, The Telegraph to Omi. He also made a presentation about his venture ‘Green Gangtok’ and appealed everyone to be eco-conscious and be the change. He said ‘Small changes do make big impacts and when you change, the world around you changes.’
Later, speaking exclusively to Eclectic Northeast, Gurung said, ‘ I am really elated to receive this award as I feel this is an acknowledgement of my work. I want to thank Telegraph and all the people who supported me in this journey.’
Regarding his upcoming projects, he said, ‘ I have started a project called Waste Environment And Reuse (WEAR). Fashion industry is the second most polluted industry in the world. We are basically creating awareness about eco-friendly fashion. We are also looking for collaborators in the entire Northeast.’
