From November 14 to 17, 2016, Shillong will be hosting India’s first ever Cherry Blossom Festival. This will also be the World’s First Autumn Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival will not only show the pink and white beauty of the cherry blossoms but will also showcase Meghalaya’s traditional arts, culture and cuisine.
The four-day festival will be organised by the Government of Meghalaya, in association with Manipur-based Institute of Bio-Resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), a national institute of the department of Biotechnology.
The festival will not only promote socio-economic development of the region but will also encourage peace, prosperity and sustainable development.
In general, cherry blossom festival which is also popularly known as Sakura Festival in Japan is held in April every year. Australia, Korea, China, the USA and some other countries celebrate the festival which help create positive impact on the local economy.
The Washington DC Cherry Blossoms Festival alone generates about US$ 126 million of tourist every year from across the world.
The opening ceremony of India’s First Cherry Blossom Festival will be inaugurated by Dr Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya on November 14, 2016 at Polo 2nd Ground, Shillong.
