For the first time ever, Sikkim launches bike rental service in the State. Tourists who can’t ride a bike or have a license can hire a driver. The rental service was launched with five 500cc Royal Enfield bikes belonging to BB Line Tours and Travels.
For hiring a bike you will have to shell out Rs 1,500 a day for a bike and a security deposit of Rs 10,000. The security deposit is refundable. If there is any damage to the bike, the cost would be deducted from the deposit. You will have to submit an original photo ID proof to obtain the bike. The rental service would be promoted on the company’s website and Facebook page.
Domestic tourists need a driving license; foreigners would need an international driving license and an Inner Line Permit as well. Riders will also have to pay for the fuel. The charges of a bike driver are yet to be fixed. Permits will have to be taken if you want to go to Nathu-la, Chhangu Lake and Baba Mandir in East district and the tourist spots in North Sikkim. Foreigners are not allowed at the tourist spots in the East.
To get the license, a tour operator, which has a minimum of five motorcycles, can apply to the motor vehicles department with bike documents, address proof, registration fees and the Sikkim subject certificate. More tour operators are likely to apply for the permit soon.
