Savita Das (name changed), a fourteen-year-old trafficked girl from Assam’s Sonitpur district broke down with relief when she finally saw her mother at the Dispur police station. While speaking to ENe, Savita said, ‘I belong to an impoverished family, my father is a daily-wage labourer and thus his earning is not insufficient to run the whole family’. Savita is not the only one; there are a number of young girls from the Northeast who are being trafficked to different parts of the country.
Interacting with the media, Rakesh Senger, project director of BBA, (campaign and victims assistance) said, ‘We have come across a number of minor girls from Sivasagar and Sonitpur districts of Assam and from Arunachal Pradesh who are working in Spas at Tamil Nadu.’
He further said, ‘As per the information, many of the trafficked girls working in spas are sexually exploited by clients who come for massages. However, since these spas are legal and registered by the government, it is very difficult to crack down on them until the victims or their families’ lodges a complaint.
