As a tribute to those who laid down their lives in the Assam Agitation, State Government has announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for their family and also erect a memorial in the city in their name. After a meeting between All Assam Students Union (AASU) leaders and chief secretary VK Pipersenia here on Wednesday, it was decided that the ex gratia will be handed over at Khanapara Veterinary College playground on December 10.
‘It was decided that the government will raise a memorial in the city, which will reflect the invaluable contribution of the martyrs. The memorial will have modern facilities to appeal to tourists and the young generation,’ a government spokesperson said. The need for a permanent initiative to engage the younger generation and make them aware of the sacrifices of the martyrs was on the agenda.
The government had proposed a policy for rehabilitation of the martyrs’ families under which the ex gratia was made an allowance for. Under existing rules, an ex gratia of Rs 30,000 each was given to these families while a few family members were given government jobs. There are 855 listed martyrs.
‘The list for awarding the ex gratia payment will be prepared by AASU and Swahid Nirjyatita Nyas and will be finalized in consultation with the state government,’ the spokesperson added.
