Congress veterans in Assam have expressed deep grief over the death of Anjan Dutta, who served as the President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. The Congress, which is yet to come in terms with its defeat in the recent assembly polls after being in power for fifteen long years, paid tribute to the departed soul in Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati by organising a condolence meeting. In this meeting, senior leaders including Tarun Gogoi, Rokibul Hussain, Ripun Bora were present along with members of the former legislative assembly, leaders, workers and sympathizers o f the party.
Recalling his long term ally Anjan Dutta, former Chief Minister of Assam and now an MLA of Titabor Constituency, Tarun Gogoi said, ‘I remember how he used to walk miles to reach the people in the rural areas ahead of the assembly elections. He was fit at that time. He was enthusiastic and always used to boost the morale of the party workers. He was a Congressman to the core. As the President of APCC, he gave his level best to strengthen the party’. ‘I remember the days of AASU Movement, when the party was in a bad shape. Anjan Dutta joined the youth Congress and revamped the party as the president of the youth Congress. Many come, join the party in its good days and then leave it when it faces bad days. But he was there for us in both good and bad times both’, added the senior Congressman.
Rokibul Hussain, former Congress Minister for Forest, Environment and Rural Development also paid tribute to Anjan Dutta in Rajiv Bhawan who passed away in AIIMS hospital in New Delhi on Thursday morning.
Speaking to the gathering at the condolence meeting in Rajiv Bhawan, Rokibul Hussain said, ‘I can’t believe the fact that Anjan Dutta would leave us so early. He was like my elder brother. He joined the party at a time when I was a young boy and my father was an MLA. I have seen him giving his best to the party. During 1985-1990, Congress was going through a bad phase. After joining of Anjan Dutta, Youth Congress got a new lease of life. May his soul rest in peace’.
On the other hand, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Rahul Gandhi, AICC General Secretary CP Joshi, Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi and other leaders visited the AIIMS hospital to pay tribute to Anjan Dutta. ‘I have never thought such a day would arrive so soon. I am here with the family of Anjan Dutta. Congress will extend its support to the family as much as possible. CP Joshi, Sonia Gandhiji and Rahul Gandhiji are also here to pay respect to Anjan Dutta’ said Gaurav Gogoi, Loksabha MP.
