To attract more visitors to North Bengal and Sikkim, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to decorate Bagdogra airport. They have decided to paint the entire premises including the terminal building representing local tourism resources. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, 15 artisans from North Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Nepal will hand paint the walls, pillars, gates and premises of the airport.
In a meeting between officials of Airport Authority of India and Siliguri’s Artmart Art Gallery, it was decided that the work will commence from November this year. Shakti Sharma the Director of Artmart informed that the walls, pillars and other areas would be adorned with pictures of various tourist spots of Darjeeling, Dooars and Sikkim.
The works will comprise pictures of Khangchendzonga landscapes, Batasia loop, toy train and plucking of tea leaves for highlighting Darjeeling, rhino and grassland to highlight Dooars and Rhododendron flower and Red Panda to highlight Sikkim. Two huge paintings will be done on the wall facing departure point depicting Batasia loop with world famous toy train on track.
