Not just Guwahati but the entire Northeast is waiting with bated breath for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will have four of its matches held in Guwahati. This is being touted as a watershed moment for the country’s football as for the first time, a tournament of this stature will be held here. Interestingly, along with the ordinary citizen of the region, militant group ULFA (I) have also expressed their excitement about the event and has thanked FIFA for choosing Assam as a venue and appealed to people to maintain peace during the event.
In an e-mail sent to media houses, Dr Abhijit Asom, President of the banned outfit said, ‘ We are very happy that FIFA has decided to stage some of the matches of the upcoming U-17 World Cup in Guwahati. We heartily thank FIFA for giving the people of Assam this wonderful opportunity. We are sure that people of Assam will learn a lot about international football from this event. The players who have come from different countries will also return with memories to cherish.’
‘We hope that people of Assam will come forward with every sort of help required by the organizers. Also they should see that peace is maintained and no miscreants get any opportunity to create any trouble. They should remember that organizing this event properly will paint a very positive picture of Assam across the world.’
