The ULFA (I) has stepped up its terror activities and targeting some important places in the State including the home town of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. This came to light following the arrest of a top ULFA (I) cadre identified as Mamon Gogoi alias Biplab Asom in a joint operation by Assam Police, Indian Army and CRPF
The apprehended cadre who belongs from Lahowal in Dibrugarh said in his confession to police said, ‘The ULFA (I) is planning attacks at the Assam BJP headquarters, Dibrugarh Sadar police station and the hometown of the Chief Minister.
He further revealed that the attack was planned after the BJP gave candidature to persons in the recent assembly elections despite the ULFA (I) issuing warnings not to do so.
According to the information provided by the security forces Biplab joined the proscribed outfit in 2015 and underwent two months bomb making and arms training in Myanmar. He was deputed by Arunoday Dohotia of ULFA (I) to carry out subversive activities at BJP office and in front of Rambadan Hotel in Dibrugarh town.
When contacted, Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay told ENe, ‘Explosive items such as detonator, timer device and 700 grams of TNT has been found from the detained rebel.’ ‘However, interrogation is on and everything can be said after the process gets over,’ he added.
