The second edition of Falcon Festival is due to be held on October 27. It will be held at Umrangso in Dima Hasao district. It was first hosted last year to create awareness and to protect migratory birds like Amur Falcons. It also aimed to promote tourism in Dima Hasao district. The Chief Guest of the festival this year will be State Minister for Forest and Environment Pramila Rani Brahma.
Amur Falcons make a brief stop at Umrangso for about one-and-a-half months in October-November during their annual seasonal flight from Siberia to South Africa. It is a small raptor of the falcon family and breeds in south-eastern and northern China. After that they migrate in large flocks across India and over the Arabian Sea to winter in South Africa.
Earlier these birds were killed for consumption. But after an initiative by the Forest Department of Dima Hasao, besides several NGOs, including Blue Hills Society the killings have come down. Now the local people welcome these migratory birds.
